The “Bairro das Estacas” [a complex of apartment buildings raised on round pillars] is regarded as a milestone development for modern architecture in Portugal. This renovation project set out to completely remodel the apartment, adapting it to contemporary living and reinstating the original interior relationships by restoring the original balconies over the gardens that characterised the urban plan for this estate. The interior is now defined and structured by a new body – a line of closets that organises and provides support to the dwelling’s various spaces (storage space was a fundamental aspect of the new programme). The parquet flooring, also in the kitchen and the bathrooms, unifies the space and lends an image of continuity.
