The last large-scale design project by Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, with the work continued on by his nephew António Pardal Monteiro, this was the first dedicated building built completely new for the National Library. Opened in 1969, with a built surface area of some 60,000 sq. m, this book depository was extended and remodelled between 2008 and 2012. The building stands out for its functionality, which still meets today’s standards, scale and the light in its interior space, as well as the interior design of the main public zones by Daciano da Costa. This tour will take visitors through the public spaces, but also to areas behind the scenes, such as the archives and conservation areas.
