Designed by Pardal Monteiro with collaboration from Jorge Ferreira Chaves (who designed the Pastelaria Mexicana), the Hotel Ritz is one of the most important examples of Portuguese modernist architecture and the first large luxury hotel to be built completely new in Lisbon. The design for such an imposing site over the inner city was governed by the principle of functional organisation, which is still the basis for the hotel’s excellence of service. The building is an excellent example of how a private owner can modernise and conserve a listed property, particularly one operating in such a demanding sector as hospitality. In its interior the Ritz also features an extensive and noteworthy collection of art works by Portuguese artists. It remains a benchmark for luxury hospitality in the city of Lisbon.
