Designed by the architect of the City Hall, this state institution occupies a site where the Royal Printing Office had been located since 1769. A number of alterations were made to the original design by the engineers responsible for the construction of the various wings, and the building was finally opened in 1913. The main façade, looking onto Rua da Escola Politécnica, reflects an attempt to reinterpret Pombaline architecture. In 2013 the building was listed as a Monument of Public Interest.
